The real business
Wall printing rarely looks the way people expect going in. Here's what the work is really like day to day, and the four pillars every successful wall printing business is built on.
A day on the job
A typical wall printing project starts long before any ink hits the wall. It starts with sales. Nobody knows you exist, so you have to go find your customers, make the pitch, and close the deal. Then comes the artwork and design, getting files lined up so they'll actually look good on that specific wall. The printing itself is only about 20% of the job.
On print day, you walk through expectations with the customer, inspect the wall, and set up. Setup alone takes one to three hours, between leveling the machine and cleaning the surface. A typical print runs one to eight hours, and large projects can take 20 to 40. If something fails, you repaint and go again. Customers remember how calm you stayed far more than the problem itself.
The four pillars
The printer is one piece. These four decide whether the business actually works.
- Sales and marketing. Finding customers, pricing jobs, and closing deals. This is where most new operators struggle.
- Art and art sourcing. Getting print ready files, working with designers, and making sure the art will actually look good on a wall.
- Install. Setup, printing, problem solving, and painting. The job site skills that build your reputation.
- Business admin. Contracts, invoicing, and scheduling.
What to build first
Most new operators pour all their energy into learning the machine. The machine matters, but a printer with no customers is just expensive equipment in your garage. Start lining up sales before your printer arrives, and sharpen your install process on real jobs from there.
